Review:
I'm probably late on this one, but if you've been sleeping on this release you're a fool, especially if you walk around dressed as a hipster. But it's alright, lackeys and old people all the same, everyone's gonna be surprised by the tunes on this album. Broken Social Scene leader Kevin Drew finally released a solo album, expected after his marriage (?) with - the way popular now thanks to Apple - Feist. I won't get into the history of it too much but cut straight into this album. This album is the greatest release of 2007 as far as rock music is concerned. From the heavily distorted "Farewell To The Pressure Kids" and subsequent crooning of "TBTF" one things clear: this album's all about melody. Not only through the instruments but also the vocals. Most obvious example would be my favorite "Gangbang Suicide". The thing I always liked about Broken Social Scene was that they were a group of highly talented musicians playing relatively simple music in lots of layers, ending with a sophisticated, supersonic and sometimes psychedelic music. "Bohdi Sappy Weekend" is a pretty good example of this, taking a relatively simple melody on the guitar and just making it WORK through various layers. Other than the ones already mentioned, my picks include "Fucked Up Kids", "Safety Bricks"... uh.. damn, to save myself from listing them all, I'll just tell you that this album is exactly the conversation piece to get into the "in" crowd, guaranteed.
